I am photographing my experience with the North East Native Americans whose history has been packaged and simplified. By investigating places filled with history, modern day cultural events and people who are invested in their heritage, I have begun to compare a prescribed experience that the general population has with that of the Native Americans. Through commercialization of Native American culture, we are given a simplified view of their past and present lifestyles. The use of layering that is found within the photographs creates tension between the presumed and the actual experiences of these indigenous people. Through research, I uncover elements of a history that has been buried in our homogenized contemporary culture. My photographs visually participate in this discussion of what has been hidden and what is revealed.
